Hazel- Year 3 2020 - 2021
Welcome to Hazel Class!
We are very fortunate to have lots of adults helping us in Hazel Class. Our class teachers are Mrs Jones (Tue-Fri) and Mrs Kelly (Mon). Mrs Wellings and Mrs Pretsell are our wonderful teaching assistants.
Autumn 1 - Our topic for this half term is 'water, water everywhere' and is based on our English book, Seal Surfer. Linked to this are all our other topics, as shown on our topic map in the attached files.
Autumn 2 - Our theme this half term is Winter, with our topic, 'Let it Snow'. We will be using our English book, Winter's Child' as a springboard to link into sustainable living and exploring the effect we are having on our planet. See the topic web for more information.
Spring 1 - ROCK AND ROLL!!! We are stepping back in time to the stone age and using our English book, 'Stone Age Boy', as a basis for writing our own stone age adventure stories. See the topic web for more information.
Spring 2 - We're going deep, deep down under the sea for this half term, exploreing forces and magnets as well as using our English book 'Big Blue Whale' as a stimulus for writing our own watery fact files.
Summer 1 - A journey would be lovely right now! We are escaping into our topic 'Voyages and Discoveries' this half term, adding our own words to the picture book 'Journey' by Aaron Becker. Look out for our travel inspired class tapestry for Art Days!
As a school, one way we award positive behaviour is through Class Dojo. We get these when we are well behaved and when we do great work. It is very exciting to see which monster will have the most points at the end of the week and half term! We have a mathematician and writer of the week. We also celebrate our readers of the week and a Values Champion - someone who has been a positive role model in the class. All these awards will be handed out in Celebration Assembly on a Friday. We also send home a weekly email to parents/carers for our "achiever" of the week.
PE will take place on Tuesday morning AND Friday afternoon. Please can you ensure your child comes into school wearing their full PE kit, suitable for outdoors. This includes appropriate footwear. You do not need to bring a change of clothes.
We reward our readers! We ask that children in Year 3 read every night for at least 15 minutes to support their development in reading. We would encourage the children to read a range of different texts. This could range from a magazine to novels to poetry! We reward this effort at home with dojos in class and golden tickets. In line with new procedures, children will be able to take one or two books home and change these on Monday only. They will then be quarantined and cleaned before returning to the shelves for the next Monday. Children are also welcome to read books from home as well and document these in their reading records.
Homework will now be set online. This will take the form of questions/ tasks set on class dojo and on MyMaths. The task may be one that is completed online or a task where a photo can be uploaded on class dojo. This will be set every Friday and due in by the following Tuesday. As times tables are also completed daily at school, we also encourage children to practise their times tables at home on a regular basis. As such, Times Table Rock Stars have been made available for the class and all have been given a log in for this.
If you have any questions, queries or problems please do not hesitate to ask a member of the Hazel team. We're all very much looking forward to an exciting and successful academic year!
